Peddlin Pig – Boone NC
When you walk in to the Peddlin Pig it offers a great feel , very authentic. It is picturesque with its wood table and country décor. The bar to the left side seemed crowded with regulars a good sign of a place people liked to come back to.
The servers were friendly but attentative and brought some delicious hush puppies to our table almost as soon as we sat down to settle in and glance at the menu. The menu was simple with exactly what you would expect in a bbq restaurant with country sides include slaw, green beans with bacon, cheesy grits, hush puppies,. Mac & cheese and more. They offered a full compliment of bbq choices which I wasn’t sure they would. In this part of the country pulled pork is definitely what people think of when you say bbq as opposed to say Texas where brisket would first come to mind.
I was happy to see that they had a sampler dinner which would allow me to taste a bit of everything and then of course you could order a larger portion of just one type of meat if you preferred. On the table they had a list of a variety of sauces they offered including everything from those more common in the area to a spicy. We all gave our orders but then after the server left to put them in we realized that no on asked what type of sauce we wanted so we waited in anticipation to see what each dish would come with.
Each dish came with no sauce at all. The server brought some smaller servings of a few types and pointed out the containers on the table with the two most common sauces. We were free to select anything on the list. This was ideal for me because as you may have realized from reading any other parts of this site I judge good bbq by what it tastes like without any sauce. Many chain restaurants just send a plate of ribs, not smoked at all, but smoothered in sauce and call it bbq.
Given the great feel of the place and display of the dishes I was really excited to dive in to the dish.
